Trump Asks Federal Agency to Investigate Saturday Night Liberal For Laughing at Him. President Cant’ See a Joke?

He took to Twitter to complain about the SNL sketch in which Alec Baldwin played Trump and roasted the current President. Trump now wants to take legal action against the comedy channel.
By now everyone knows the kind of hatred that President Donald Trump has for the late-night comedy show, Saturday Night Live or SNL, as it popularly called. He particularly hates the parody SNL sketch on him. Ever since he became the President of the United States, the show has been relentlessly lampooning him. On their part, the show follows each and every step of the president and heavily criticize his and his government's policies. There have been regular exchanges between the President and the show on Twitter where he has shown his total distaste for the show and its political skits. Donald Trump has now taken this rivalry with the show to a whole new level by suggesting that the show be investigated by a federal agency for - and take special note of this - mocking him! That's right. The president believes that mocking him is a charge that is deemed fit to be investigated by a government agency and the internet was alight with comments of all sorts from mocking the president further for his thin skin to others supporting the president's comments. His weapon of choice to make such a suggestion - of course, Twitter. Early on Sunday morning he took to the microblogging account and wrote against the NBC's late-night comedy show.

In his tweets, he commented his usual remarks about the show being "not funny" and with a cast with "no talent" and how it can spend it's time "knocking the same person (me), over & over." Then came the big suggestion whether the Federal Election Commission should look into the matter. He also suggested that there might be a "collusion with the Democrats" and even "Russia!" Now we don't know exactly whether Trump was being sarcastic when he used the words "collusion" and "Russia."

Was he highlighting the ongoing investigations into his involvement with the Russians in influencing the elections or was he really being serious? Who knows! He further also targeted the usual 'fake news' media and boasted how about his approval ratings were at an all-time high although without giving any survey or proof of the same. However, the thing to note is that SNL hadn't even aired a new episode last night. It only aired a repeat show that featured one Trump sketch with Alec Baldwin reprising his role as Trump.

The rivalry between Baldwin and Trump also reached new grounds since the actor mocked the president in show after show. It was also not the first time that Trump has called for an investigation. In a report in The Guardian, Donald Trump referred to SNL as a “total Republican hit job” while also calling for “retribution” and an investigation of the show after an unflattering portrayal of the president by Alec Baldwin, just last month.

The actor responded by questioning whether the president’s words represented 'a threat to my safety and that of my family'. Baldwin's caricature as Donald Trump with a blonde wig, his characteristic pout, gestures and exaggerated version of the president’s speech-making style has angered Trump more than one time. In this particular sketch that got the 'retribution' reaction of the president, the actor parodied Trump's press conference where he announced a national emergency over his plans to build a border wall with Mexico.

The president's suggestion of a federal investigation against SNL was met with a number of reactions. A Twitter user and editor of a magazine, Brian Krassenstein‏ who described himself as an outspoken critic of Trump wrote: I don't remember Obama claiming that SNL was in collusion with the GOP when they made fun of him week after week for 8 years.... Oh, that's right... He had THICK SKIN! Another twitter user Jay wrote: What makes this funny.....it was a repeat episode.....

A report in ew.com said that entertainment programming mocking newsworthy figures is protected as free speech. The report further highlighted that Trump may be referring to the “equal time rule” that mandates TV stations give equal broadcast time and opportunities to opposing political candidates in prime-time if requested. However, Trump is the President of the United States and no longer a candidate. It also pointed out that SNL is in late-night and not prime-time show, a parody show and not a news show. In addition to all this, it also highlighted that there’s also FCC’s “fairness doctrine,” - a rule that required networks to give balanced coverage to matters of public controversy. The report added that this policy was removed back in 1987.
