A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood' has released a new image of Tom Hanks as the iconic Fred Rogers and it's sending us all on a nostalgic trip.
Fred Rogers remains an icon of kindness and wholesomeness to this day. Although it's been almost two decades since his show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood went off the air, Fred's manner of hosting the show keeps him fresh in our minds for all the right reasons. His slow determined speech and pure warmth were unlike anything we've seen on screen, and when it came time to cast someone to play him in the upcoming film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, there wasn't anyone better suited for the job than the legendary Tom Hanks. The first image we saw of him in character definitely seems to indicate as much.

Six months after Sony Pictures released the very first picture of the 62-year-old dressed in Mr. Rogers' signature bright red sweater, buttoned-up shirt and tie over khaki pants, the studio has released yet another image that's sending us down a very nostalgic lane. Released in honor of what would've been the late host's 91st birthday, the snap shows Hanks on the sets of the upcoming film. Sporting Rogers' memorable coiffed, gray hairstyle, the actor bears a striking resemblance to the legendary TV personality. It features the star tossing a shoe in the air with a radiant smile on his face.

Going by the setting of the photograph, it appears to be a recreation of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood's opening where the host would change from dress shoes to sneakers. Although it doesn't reveal much else about the film's plot, it does say a lot about the lengths to which director Marielle Heller and her team have gone to reproduce the Mister Rogers set. Seeing as how a major selling point for the movie is the nostalgic value attached to Fred Rogers' show, the filmmakers are sure to spend a bulk of their energy in making sure they do justice to even the minutest details pertaining to it.

Alongside the image, the studio tweeted, "Happy Birthday, Mister Rogers! How has our favorite neighbor inspired you to spread kindness? See Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers in #ABeautifulDayMovie." Hanks also paid tribute to the legend on his birthday, sharing a picture of a knitted Mr. Rogers toy with the caption, "Happy Birthday, Mr. Rogers! Hanx." A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is inspired by the real-life friendship between Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod. The film revolves around the dynamic between Rogers and journalist Lloyd Vogel (based on Junod), who is tasked with writing a magazine profile on Rogers.

Though initially cynical, Vogel (portrayed by Matthew Rhys) finds his perspective on life transformed drastically through his interactions with Rogers. In real-life, Junod and the beloved host ended up forging a friendship over the course of their lives up until Rogers' death in 2003. Last month, Sony Pictures had released an image of Hanks and Rhys in character in celebration of Random Acts of Kindness Day. Captioning the image, the studio tweeted, "According to Mister Rogers, 'There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.' A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD in theaters Nov 22. #RandomActsOfKindnessDay."

According to People, TriStar Pictures described the upcoming film as a heart-warmer in which "a cynical journalist begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write a profile piece on the beloved icon and finds his perspective on life transformed." Although the film has been referred to as a biopic since the time it was announced, Heller clarified that this is not the case. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the 39-year-old said, "[This] movie is…. not a biopic. I disliked that when it got announced it was characterized as such. It’s really not. It’s a movie that’s largely focused on a reporter and [Mr. Rogers’] relationship to his life, and how [the reporter’s] whole world changes when coming in contact with Fred Rogers."

"It’s a story for our times, a story about kindness and family connection and trying to tap into our better self. God knows we need that right now! In the research for the movie, the writers found that more people than they could possibly count credited Mr. Rogers with changing their lives... [It’s about] one man who’s in a critical point in his life — becoming a new father, having issues with his own father — and meeting Mr. Rogers to write a piece about him, thinking it’s going to be a bit of a puff piece, but it ends up changing his entire life," the director added.

Due for release on November 22 this year, the film is produced by Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf of Big Beach, as well as Youree Henley. Meanwhile, Leah Holzer (Big Beach), Fitzerman-Blue, and Harpster serve as executive producers of the project, reported Deadline. Apart from Hanks and Rhys, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood boasts of an extensive cast of stellar actors. Veronica Mars star Enrico Colantoni will portray Bill Isler, longtime president & CEO of The Fred Rogers Company, while Blue Valentine star Maryann Plunkett will play the role of Joanne Rogers, Fred’s wife.

Additionally, Tammy Blanchard (Into The Woods), Wendy Makkena (Sister Act films), Sakina Jaffrey (Timeless), Maddie Corman (Younger), Carmen Cusack (Facebook’s Sorry for Your Loss), and Noah Harpster (Transparent) will also feature in the film. Though Hanks hasn't been nominated for an Oscar since 2000, this movie might just be the one to break his dry spell. Especially since the 2018 documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor? which explored the lasting legacy and impact of Roger and his show, was one of the biggest snubs at the Oscars this year, voters might look to recognize Rogers via the upcoming film.
