Pope Francis Helped Migrants Crossing The US-Mexico Border and Donated 500 Thousand Dollars

Due to the worsening humanitarian crisis at the US-Mexico border, the Pope has chosen to help immigrants access basic necessities after completing the difficult journey.
In the recent past, Pope Francis has been open about his liberal, progressive stance on immigration. The religious leader has condemned conservative governments that attempt to place barriers (of the wall kind or otherwise) in order to prevent immigrants looking for better futures from crossing over into their countries. Now, a recent act of kindness has further affirmed his support for immigrants. According to CNN, the Vatican announced on Saturday, April 27, that Pope Francis had donated half a million dollars to aid migrants in Mexico crossing over to the United States in search of opportunities to improve their lives.

As per the statement, the Pope was inspired to donate the money after learning of migrants who "traveled more than 4,000 kilometers on foot and with makeshift vehicles from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala." Unlike the narrative perpetuated by most right-wing governments wherein they suggest that most immigrants are not hoping to "steal jobs" or take advantage of the migration system, the Vatican acknowledges this is vastly untrue.

The Vatican additionally notes that media coverage is also often negative, painting immigrants in an unfavorable light. Therefore, governments as well as private individuals, are less likely to make donations to migrants despite the fact that they arrive in the United States from poverty and war-stricken nations after putting their lives and families at risk by completing the dangerous and deadly journey across the border.

The Church regrettably noted, "Men and women, often with young children, flee poverty and violence, hoping for a better future in the United States. However, the US border remains closed to them." While the Catholic Church offers thousands of these migrants a place to stay in the hotels within dioceses or religious congregations and even provides other basic necessities such as clothing, there is still more work that could be done. In light of this, Pope Francis chose to make a valuable and generous donation.

The $500,000 will be utilized to help migrants arriving from Mexico. According to the Vatican's statement, "[The] amount will be distributed among 27 projects in 16 dioceses and among Mexican religious congregations that have asked for help in order to continue providing housing, food, and basic necessities to our brothers and sisters." As of now, 13 projects have already received approval. These projects will be conducted by the dioceses of Cuautitlán, Nogales, Mazatlán, Querétaro, San Andrés Tuxtla, Nuevo Laredo, Tijuana, and the Scalabrinians (the congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and the Josefina Sisters).

Meanwhile, a further 14 projects are currently being evaluated before their implementation through the donation. Before funds are transferred to each project, accounts of how the donation will be used must be communicated. This enables the Vatican to ensure "the regulated and transparent use of the resources." As most individuals are dissuaded from donating to groups in need due to a fear of how the resources will be used — and whether they will be used correctly — this is an important step in the right direction.

The joint statement from the Vatican Church and Pope Francis concluded, "Thanks to these projects, and thanks to Christian charity and solidarity, the Mexican Bishops hope to be able to continue helping our migrant brothers and sisters." Reactions to the donation have so far been mixed; both Christians and those of other diverse faiths are unsure about whether the donation will be beneficial and help put an end to the ills of immigration or if this will only worsen the huge humanitarian crisis at the US-Mexico border.

Taking to social media platform Twitter, many have expressed their opinions. Twitter user O_darci posted, "The Church should help support them - they give their last pesos to the Church and despite its wealth, it does little for them. The teachings of the Catholic Church is one of the reasons these folks are kept in poverty and subservience, especially their women." Inmindof added, "This is exactly what the church is supposed to do."

On the other hand, Uffdajo criticized the decision to make the donation. They stated, "Idiot move. Why not fix the problems where they are [living]? Dummy is supporting drip mules and child traffickers." "Pope Francis best stay out of frays dealing with migrants, after all, migrants are beating down Rome’s doors and the Vatican is a stone's throw [away]. Perhaps America can donate $500,000 to Vatican's migrants sleeping outside their 'walls' trying to get in," commented Royrogue25.
