Pelosi Tells Democrats That Trump Won't Step Down from the Presidency and They Have To Beat Him Big In 2020

Impeachment won’t work, Pelosi warns; asks Democrats to ditch left-leaning policies that will alien moderate voters.
While the vocal Democratic party members are calling for the impeachment of Donald Trump, Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, wants Democrats to take a more pragmatic and measured approach to remove the President from office, The New York Times reports. Democrats have cranked up the pressure on Republicans and Donald Trump following the release of the Mueller report and Attorney General William Barr’s testimony in the Senate but while the development of events have further convinced Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the need to remove Trump as President, she believes Democrats will only end up wasting energy and time trying to impeach the Republican.

Nancy Pelosi was highly critical of William Barr’s testimony and said she was ‘very concerned’ with the latter’s handling of the Robert Mueller report and his refusal to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, “When you’re looking at Barr, you just think, ‘How could he sell his soul — alleged soul — to Donald Trump,’” Pelosi said.

Pelosi, five months into her second speakership, is asking Democrats to focus their energy on upstaging Trump in the 2020 elections, and not just to upstage him but to do it with a huge margin. The reason? She believes Trump won’t take a small margin defeat lying down and will call foul having already bombarded his voter base with constant rhetoric on voter fraud since his election victory in 2016. “We have to inoculate against that, we have to be prepared for that,” Pelosi said during an interview at the Capitol.

Nancy Pelosi is also concerned that the impeachment process will be a long drawn out process that will get no mileage in a Republican-dominated Senate. “My view is that impeachment is very divisive in the country, and when we see what we need to see it may be imperative that he be impeached. But up until then, he’s not worth it,” Pelosi told AP in an interview.

She also believes it is imperative that Democrats defeat Trump by such a large margin that he will be left with no choice but to accept defeat, “If we win by four seats, by a thousand votes each, he’s not going to respect the election. He would poison the public mind. He would challenge each of the races; he would say you can’t seat these people. We had to win. Imagine if we hadn’t won — oh, don’t even imagine. So, as we go forward, we have to have the same approach,” Pelosi said.

Left-leaning Democrats Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have been big advocates of the new Green Deal and Medicare for all but Speaker Nancy Pelosi is yet to warm up to the idea of a drastic shift to the left and believes Democrats must “own the center-left and own the mainstream” before advocating left-leaning policies.

“We did not engage in some of the other exuberances that exist in our party. Our passions were for health care, bigger paychecks, cleaner government — a simple message,” Ms. Pelosi said.

Left-leaning Democrats are educating Americans about the imperative need for the progressive measures with both policies featuring heavily in the Presidential campaigns of Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Pelosi believes the socialist policies will alienate moderate voters who have flocked to the democratic party since the ascent of Donald Trump. The speaker believes a pragmatic approach might serve Democrats better in the long run, to remove Donald Trump as President and in installing a Democrat to the White House.
