Tom Hanks Says He’s The Luckiest Man Alive and Entrusts with a Secret of His Long and Happy Marriage To Rita Wilson

The actor believes that married life isn't that complicated and shouldn't be hard work. No wonder he's been married for over three decades.
Forrest Gump star Tom Hanks is unforgettable for many reasons but perhaps his 31-year-long marriage to wife Rita Wilson is the most adorable one. Even after over three decades of being married to each other, the actor is not tired of her or married life and is still excited about how Wilson wants to continue being with him after so many years. Though his marriage with Wilson is his second, he shows us all that anything is possible when you find "the one" and are ready to support, cherish, and love them through all the ups and downs of life. As reported by PEOPLE, he revealed some of his tips for a long and happy marriage — just like his.

Though some of us may believe that there are mysterious, complex ways to sustain a marriage only known to a select few, the real method is actually quite simple, at least according to Hanks. He once stated, "I wish there was a secret, you know. We just like each other. You start there." Huh, who knew? Marriages work when two partners actually enjoy each others' company and want to spend time with each other, learning and growing together.

He added, "My secret to a happy marriage is just being married to the right woman. I got lucky with the wonderful Rita Wilson. I’m the luckiest man alive." We may not all be as lucky as Hanks to find someone like Wilson, but the two have lots in common, which makes it easy to understand why they get along so well with each other. They're both actors and also share a similar understanding of faith and God. As fans will already know, Hanks converted to the Greek Orthodox Church, the religion of Wilson and her family, prior to marrying her.

But how do you find someone who's willing to do all that and more with you? Sadly, it appears that the Academy Award winner doesn't have the answer to that. He's still surprised (and equally ecstatic) about how Wilson still wants to be with him. "I still can’t believe my wife goes out with me," he said. "If we were in high school and I was just funny, I’d never have the courage to talk to her." The two initially met on the set of TV comedy Bosom Buddies but didn't really hit it off until they reunited in 1985 on the set of the comedy film Volunteers.

Now, they have a beautiful family together with their two sons. The oldest is Chester Marlon "Chet" Hanks, who has taken after his parents, acting in a minor role as a student in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He even released a rap song in 2011. Their youngest son is Truman Theodore, who hasn't committed himself to the film industry just yet but has worked on some movie-related projects as a production assistant intern.

Even after having two kids, navigating the often tumultuous adventure that is Hollywood, and fiercely battling disease together (Wilson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and had to undergo a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery), the couple is simply not ready to let go of each other. The Toy Story star claimed it is because conflict does not deter them from loving each other fully. "They say it must be hard work. No, it’s not," affirmed Hanks. "We give each other a natural sense of support for whatever the other wants to pursue. Our marriage doesn’t require vast work," he added.

He noted, "Every now and again you know, you gotta get over some stuff but life is one damn thing after another and it's actually more pleasant to be able to go home with someone you like to spend time with in order to get with it." When something is easy like Sunday morning, there's no wonder it works like a smooth-running, well-oiled machine.
