Science Approves That Youngest Siblings Are The Most Amusing

A study by UK research firm YouGov shows that birth order among siblings affects personality traits - including responsibility and humor.
Every family has that one person that provides the laughs, and the ability to entertain has been the cause of many a sibling rivalry. If you've always wondered who among your siblings was most likely to make it in the comedy business, you can now turn to cold hard data science for answers. Research by UK research firm YouGov shows that birth order among siblings does, in fact, affect personality traits - and what's more, the youngest sibling in a family is most often the funniest. The study also confirms that the oldest child in the family is more likely to feel the weight of responsibility, while the youngest children are often more relaxed.

The study showed that a clear divide in personality traits emerges when splitting out the first and last born siblings in British families with more than one child (86% of the population). YouGov asked people who grew up with siblings about various characteristics they displayed in comparison to their brothers and sisters and found that 54% of oldest children felt that they were more responsible, as compared to 31% of last-borns. They also discovered that not only did last-borns perceive themselves as funnier, they were also more easy-going and relaxed than their older siblings. According to YouGov, "To some extent age itself, rather than family dynamics, may be responsible for the differing characteristics. Older children, having had more time to get on in life, are more likely to say they are more successful than their siblings." The study also concedes that family forces also contribute to shaping these traits - as parental attention shifts onto younger children, older siblings have to fend for themselves more often than not. The study was conducted with a sample size of 1561 adults from over Great Britain, all of whom had siblings. They were asked to compare various personality traits with those of their siblings, including humor, responsibility, and family-orientedness.
