What would you say is the best thing about a dog? Many of us would have our own opinion but we would probably all agree that dogs have the ability to change lives. When you have a dog as a family pet, we recognize that our family is never the same and that is true in the best way possible. We even may measure our own lives according to the impact that our pets have on our lives. After all, they are a family member that is genuine and will always be there for us.

Dogs tend to offer so much to us but it’s interesting that they never ask for anything in return. Sure, we may provide them with food, shelter and medical care when necessary but even without those factors in place, they will still be by our side through thick and thin. When we come home feeling depressed or lonely, they are there to greet us at the door. They are more than a household pet, dogs can actually save lives in many ways.

This story is about the service dog named Pax. He helped a disabled veteran and was a companion to him on a daily basis. Pax also helped another individual who was in a correctional facility, although most people didn’t realize it.

Bill Campbell was in the Iraq war and he had a traumatic brain injury that left him with 100% disability when he came home. Everyone thought that his quality of life would be reduced signicantly but when he had a Golden Labrador service dog, it proved to be just what he needed. The dog was trained to help people who had PTSD. He stood with Bill and gave him all of the strength necessary to live his life again.

Bill was thankful that he had this dog and he was also thankful to a very special woman who trained him. He wanted to meet the woman so he went to Bedford Hills Women’s Correctional Facility to meet the trainer face-to-face. Her name is Lauri.

Pax recognize the surroundings as soon as he was there. His tail was wagging and he was beyond excited to be there again. Then he spotted Lauri from a hilltop and suddenly took off running as fast as he could to his old trainer. You could tell that he was overexcited when he pounced on her but she was just as excited to see
him. Lauri and Bill gave a big hug to a mutual friend that they had in the special dog.

The reunion continued with Bill inside where the women were training service dogs. He sat down with Lauri and realized that his dog had meant very much to her. She even said that Pax impacted her life to the point that he changed it, so Bill was in a special position that he received a gift in the form of his beloved dog.
Lauri explained:

“I knew when they told me when he was going into PTSD training, that he was going to make somebody feel the sense of freedom that he gave me in a place where I was supposed to be everything but (freedom).” “I realized, by giving me Pax and by taking him from me. He had given me the greatest gift that anyone has ever given me my entire life. He had restored a piece of my soul”.

Lauri was was in tears and everyone knew that day that Pax saved two lives.
